| Term | Definition |
| Action | The betting activity that takes place on each betting round. Having your bet called is also often referred to as "getting some action." |
| AK | In Texas Hold Em, a very powerful poker preflop hand containing both an Ace and a King, either suited or unsuited. Of the unpaired hole card combinations, this is the most desirable. Also known as Big Slick. |
| All-In | The most exciting aspect of a No Limit game, the all-in is the action of wagering all of one's chips on a given hand. This aggressive move may be made on any betting round of a No Limit game. To win an All-In is known as a Double-Up since that player has indeed doubled the number of chips in his stack. |
| Amateur | A semi-pro, beginner, or non-professional. Amateur poker players play for the love of the game and love to learn to play better poker, though many do make money playing online poker. | American Airlines | A nickname for the best possible Texas Hold Em poker preflop hand, pocket Aces. Pocket Aces are a wired pair accepted as the strongest hold em poker preflop or Texas Hold Em starting hand. |
| Ante | A small portion of a bet contributed by each player to seed the pot at the beginning of a poker hand. Most Texas hold'em games do not have an ante; they use "blinds" as a forced bet to build the initial pot. |
| AR | Another term for Ace-rag or weak Ace. A poker preflop hand containing an Ace and a low ranking second card, usually with a denomination below 10. This hand may be either suited or unsuited. See also Ace-rag and weak Ace. |
| Back Door Draw | A term used by your online poker tutor and others referring to a weak draw requiring runner-runner cards to fill it. Put another way, a hand in which you hold 3 of the necessary cards to complete the flush or straight draw, and you must hit both of the other components on the next two cards. |
| Betting Round | A period of time in which each active player in a pot can fold, call, or raise. Texas Hold EM and Omaha Hold Em feature four betting rounds at which time players can wager on their hands. |
| Bicycle | In games played for Low, this is the common phrase for the best possible low card combination to make a low card hand. This is sometimes known as the "wheel" as well. |
| Big Blind | The larger of the two blinds typically used in a hold'em game. The big blind is a full first round bet. See also "blind" and "small blind." |
| Big Slick | Another term for Ace-King. See AK. |
| Blank | A harmless card that seems unlikely to improve anyone's hand. Usually used when referring to a small denomination that is also not an element of any likely flush or straight draws. |
| Blind | A forced bet (or partial bet) put in by one or more players before any cards are dealt. Typically, blinds are put in by players immediately to the left of the button. See also "live blind." |
| Bluff | As defined by your online poker tutor, a bluff is betting with a hand that does not figure to best and is probably not strong enough to win at showdown. Bluffing in poker is a powerful tool in an winning poker betting strategy!!! |
